Here we are, at the start of the 2026-27 Premier League season, and amid the endless conversations about who’ll win it this year (Arsenal) and who’ll underperform (Spurs), we could all do with a daily soccer trivia game to keep us on our toes. Finally, a bloke from New England seems to have cracked it.

TopClubTen is the next game to take up the mantle from the short-lived Football Grid , which disappeared almost as quickly as it started, though admittedly this one is much less complicated — and, by extension, something that will hopefully stay around for much longer.

The free game, which tests you on six clubs daily (Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea, and Manchesters City and United), follows the format of Tenable , the now-defunct U.K. game show hosted by the marvelous Warwick Davis. In a similar format to Family Feud , TopClubTen gives you ten top answers, ordered by amount, recency, value, and so on.

Upon guessing the player, your answer runs up the board, so you’re in suspense until they either appear, or you find out you’re wrong. You have three lives, after which point you’re done, and the answers reveal themselves.

It’s the brainchild of Nathan Sherzer, a 42-year-old Liverpool fan from Greenwich, Connecticut. He created the game because he felt like fans wanted to focus more on their own team, and the memories that dedicated followings bring. He’d know; he’s followed the Reds for 30 years, back when they had Stan Collymore, Robbie Fowler, David James, and Stig Inge Bjørnebye.

“I love how football can suddenly bring back a player or an era you haven’t thought about in years,” he says. “The Tenable format felt perfect for that. That moment when an answer appears, and you think, ‘Of course! How did I forget him?’ is exactly what I wanted to recreate.

“I’ve always loved the idea behind Tenable , and football felt perfect for it. There are so many stats, players and moments that you think you remember until you actually have to name the ten. That’s the bit I love.”

Sherzer’s not wrong. Friday’s questions focused on player appearances under a specific manager. For Arsenal, it was most games played under Arsene Wenger. You’ll get a few big hitters immediately: Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, and Thierry Henry are shoo-ins. Freddie Ljungberg appeared to me in a fleeting moment, and I punched the air when it came up fifth.

“Seeing a name like Ljungberg appear and having that ‘of course!’ reaction is exactly what I wanted the game to create,” Sherzer says. “The fact that you cheered when Ljungberg came up is pretty much why I made the game.”

That said, after four or five right answers, you can hit a wall. Three lives gone, and you’re kicking yourself that you didn’t get Theo Walcott, and angry that you wasted two guesses on goalkeepers when we all know Wenger never actually settled on one during his entire reign. (Ray Parlour, the Romford Pelé, was ninth — incredible!)

There’s still more than enough room for TopClubTen to grow. “The ambition is to make TopClubTen part of a football fan’s daily routine,” says Sherzer. “Right now it’s the Big Six, with a new game for every club every day, but I’d love to expand to more clubs.

“The challenge is making sure the questions stay interesting, and the answers are accurate as the archive grows, but I think there’s enough football history out there to keep us going for a very long time.”

Given that soccer is more about the stats than ever before, thanks to the likes of xG, successful final third passes, and clearances off the line, so there’s always a new angle. While there’s probably no real market to customize questions for, say, Hull City, Ipswich Town, or Brentford, there could be some great opportunities for other ideas.

I’d personally love a matchday special: a simple, one-shot quiz that’s not necessarily team-based, or something specifically based on the day’s fixtures. Sherzer knows what he’s doing, in any case. I just wish I didn’t have a fifth unmissable daily game to humiliate my lack of knowledge, but then again, I’m a Hartlepool United fan, so I probably deserve it.
