Mayor Of Kingstown Is Now Streaming On Netflix
In a surprise deal, Paramount has licensed out all four seasons of one of the most popular shows on Paramount+ to Netflix. Starting today, you can stream all four seasons of Mayor Of Kingstown starring Jeremy Renner. That’s quite the win for Netflix and its subscribers, marking the first Taylor Sheridan show to make its way to Netflix and opening the door to many possibilities.
Could we see Landman , Spec Ops: Lioness or possibly even Yellowstone make their way to Netflix in the future? Anything seems possible. Here’s everything you need to know about the hit crime drama.
What Is Mayor Of Kingstown About?
Mayor of Kingstown is a crime drama from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, set in the fictional company town of Kingstown, Michigan, where the prison system is essentially the only functioning industry. Sheridan likes to tackle subjects like this, from ranching to oil to the prison industry, and use them as the lynchpin for his shows.
Jeremy Renner stars as Mike McLusky, a fixer from a powerful local family that operates in the murky space between law enforcement, prison guards, inmates, gangs, politicians and organized crime. Mike isn’t actually the mayor. The title refers to his unofficial position as Kingstown’s chief power broker and peacemaker ( similar to Harry’s role in MobLand , which shares one cast member – Toni Bamtefa plays Dog in MobLand and Bunny in Mayor of Kingstown ).
The series begins with Mike working alongside his older brother Mitch (Kyle Chandler), who occupies that role when the story starts. Circumstances quickly force Mike to take on far more responsibility, leaving him at the center of violent factions on the brink of war.
It’s one of Sheridan’s bleakest shows (which says a lot given how bleak Sheridan’s work can be) dealing heavily with incarceration, corruption, gang violence, police brutality and the way violence perpetuates itself through institutions and families. It’s also one of Jeremy Renner’s best roles.
Mayor Of Kingstown At-A-Glance
Jeremy Renner — Mike McLusky: The central character and unofficial “Mayor” of Kingstown, acting as an intermediary between criminals, inmates, cops, prison officials and other competing factions.
Hugh Dillon — Ian Ferguson: A veteran Kingstown police detective and longtime ally of the McLusky family. Dillon also co-created the series with Sheridan.
Taylor Handley — Kyle McLusky: Mike’s younger brother and a police officer who repeatedly finds himself pulled into the violence surrounding his family.
Tobi Bamtefa — Deverin “Bunny” Washington: A powerful Crips leader and one of Mike’s most important (and complicated) allies.
Dianne Wiest — Miriam McLusky: Mike’s mother, a college professor who teaches incarcerated prisoners and has a deeply strained relationship with her sons and their activities.
Emma Laird — Iris: A young woman initially used by organized crime to manipulate powerful men who becomes closely connected to Mike.
Aidan Gillen — Milo Sunter: A dangerous Russian mobster whose history with Mike makes him one of the show’s major antagonists.
Edie Falco – Nina Hobbs : A formidable prison warden at Anchor Bay Prison who joined the cast in Season 4.
Kyle Chandler — Mitch McLusky: Mike’s older brother and the original “Mayor” when the series begins (and, notably, one of the stars of HBO’s recently ended superhero series, Lanterns ).
Other significant cast members across the series include Derek Webster as Stevie, Hamish Allan-Headley as Robert Sawyer, Michael Beach as Kareem Moore, Nishi Munshi as Tracy McLusky and Necar Zadegan as Evelyn Foley.
The 64% Rotten Tomatoes score for the series is largely thanks to the first two seasons, which were the most-reviewed and least well-received. Season 4 has a perfect 100% RT score, though only five critics reviewed the season. The audience score for Season 4 is 88%, however, with hundreds of reviews. That places it just above the other three seasons, all of which have at least an 80% “Popcornmeter” score.
What Other Paramount Shows Are Coming To Netflix?
Netflix revealed that it had signed a non-exclusive licensing deal with Paramount to stream 20 Paramount shows on the platform. Only five of these have been revealed. Alongside the first four seasons of Mayor of Kingstown , US and international audiences will gain access to SEAL Team and Watson , while international audiences will be able to stream Matlock (2024) and The King of Queens .
Season 5 of Mayor of Kingstown , which is not out yet and has no release date, is not part of the licensing deal.
