Marshall Reveals New Milton On-Ear Headphones With 80-Hour Playtime
It’s been a while since Marshall announced a new pair of headphones. The classic British audio brand built its reputation making guitar amplifiers for some of the biggest names in rock music. The Marshall Group also makes speakers, earbuds and headphones alongside its amplifiers.
Headquartered in Stockholm, the Marshall Group is ultimately owned by the China-based private equity firm HongShan Capital Group, formerly known as Sequoia China. HongShan acquired a majority stake in the business, valued at around $1.16 billion, in a deal with several investment firms, including Altor Telia Company and Zenith VC. Despite this, the family of the brand’s founder, Jim Marshall, retains a minority holding thought to be around 20%.
Today, Marshall has announced the launch of the Milton A.N.C., a new pair of wireless headphones that offer portability and an extended battery life. With up to 50 hours of playtime using the adaptive noise cancellation feature turned on and up to 80 hours with it turned off, the Milton A.N.C. headphones can last the course of a weekly commute with a single battery charge.
Designed for maximum portability, the Milton A.N.C. have a foldable design that keeps the headphones’ shape even when they are packed into a work bag while memory foam ear cushions provide a more comfortable fit for extended listening. The square-shaped TPU ear caps have a textured leather surface, brass metal logo and powder-coated metal arms that give the headphones a classic Marshall guitar amp vibe.
These new headphones feature next-generation adaptive noise-cancelling technology for analyzing ambient sounds and adjusting the noise cancellation level in real time. The ANC blocks out noisy environments so the listener can stay immersed in their music, movie or phone call. Transparency Mode lets the user hear conversations or travel announcements instantly without the need to remove the headphones.
Nicolas Pignier Delafontaine, is Marshall’s senior manager of audio and acoustic. He says: “If you compare Milton A.N.C. with our other on-ear headphones, like the beloved design of Major V, you’ll notice a few big differences. We’ve increased the ear cushion size to help keep the sound in and improve passive noise attenuation. Larger earpads and softer memory foam also mean the headphones are more comfortable to wear over longer periods. We've introduced an entirely new driver system tuned to improve bass and treble extension, delivering dynamic Hi-Res audio with rich details. On top of that, 6 microphones optimally placed for ANC and call complement the acoustic design for highly effective noise reduction.”
Adaptive Loudness is another automated feature built into the Milton A.N.C headphones. This function subtly adjusts the playback tonality using up to six microphones built into the headphones. Adaptive Loudness adjusts both the listening volume and the environmental noise so that, whatever the volume, the sound quality remains the same, enabling the listener to enjoy the details in the music without constant fine-tuning or fiddling with volume levels or EQ.
The headphones are equipped with a new feature called Soundstage spatial audio, Marshall’s own spatialization algorithm that can be activated with the Marshall app to boost the depth and width of any stereo track by placing the listener at the heart of the music. Another useful feature is the built-in support for Apple Find My and Google Find Hub should they ever be lost or mislaid.
Built with longevity in mind, the Milton A.N.C. headphones support the latest Bluetooth 6.0 with LE-Audio. It also handles SBC, AAC, LC3 and LDAC audio codecs. The headphones are also fully repairable and powered by a replaceable battery. There’s also wired connectivity via USB-C cable for higher-resolution audio as well as LDAC support for Hi-Res audio without wires.
Like other models in the Marshall headphone lineup, the Milton A.N.C. has a four-way joystick control made of brass and a programmable multi-function button. The overall design of the headphones has been softened compared to the Major V and the finish is robust and well-suited for daily commuting.
The sound of the new Milton A.N.C. benefits from Marshall’s newly designed 32mm dynamic drivers, which have been optimized for full-range frequency extension from sub-bass through upper treble to 40kHz. The tonal profile sits between the energy and immediacy of the Marshall Major V and the refinement of Marshall’s Monitor III A.N.C.
