Luigi Mangione Murder Trial Won’t Happen In September As Planned
Luigi Mangione will not go to trial in state court next month as previously scheduled, a New York judge ruled Monday, postponing the trial after he separately pleaded guilty in federal court—which his lawyers argue means his state charges should now be thrown out.
Judge Gregory Carro responded Monday to a request Mangione’s lawyers submitted Friday, asking the state court to throw out the charges against him in light of Mangione pleading guilty in federal court.
Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking crimes Friday, saying in court that he “shot” UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which his attorneys argue should nullify the state trial, given “double jeopardy” laws that prohibit defendants from being prosecuted twice for the same crime.
Carro has not yet ruled on throwing out the charges, but asked for prosecutors to respond to the request by Oct. 9—meaning the trial will not begin Sept. 8 as had been previously scheduled.
It’s still unclear when or if the trial will take place, but it won’t start for months at the earliest, as Carro scheduled the next hearing in the case for Dec. 10.
Mangione’s federal sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18 in Manhattan. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Mangione fatally shot Thompson in 2024 and was arrested following a five-day manhunt. An alleged “manifesto” was found when Mangione was arrested in 2024 that aired out grievances with corporate greed and the U.S. healthcare system. His case garnered national attention, as well as support from some Americans who also scrutinized healthcare in the U.S. Mangione was initially charged in New York with murder as an act of terrorism and was charged with stalking and murder by the Justice Department, which carried the death penalty as a possible punishment. However, a federal judge dismissed the DOJ’s murder charge against him this year, meaning he would be able to avoid the death penalty in litigation. Mangione pleaded guilty to his federal stalking charges this month.
