What Is Ludwig Season 2 About?
Light spoilers for Season 1.
In the first season, reclusive puzzle-setter John “Ludwig” Taylor (David Mitchell) was drawn into an extraordinary deception when his identical twin brother, Detective Chief Inspector James Taylor, mysteriously disappeared. Persuaded by James’s wife Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin) to impersonate his brother, John found himself working as a police detective despite having no law enforcement experience.
Fortunately, John’s unusual talent for solving puzzles proved surprisingly useful when it came to solving murders. Season 2 finds John no longer pretending to be James. Instead, he’s been officially recruited as a crime scene consultant for the Cambridge police, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) to investigate, and puzzle out, confounding crimes and mysterious murders.
But James remains missing, and John has been forbidden from using police resources to investigate his brother’s disappearance. That doesn’t stop John and Lucy from continuing their own search for answers, even as their investigation threatens to uncover a much larger conspiracy and cover-up.
The new season once again combines standalone murder mysteries with the ongoing investigation into James’s disappearance, introducing new suspects, allies and complications along the way.
What Happened In Ludwig Season 1?
Season 1 introduced John Taylor, a solitary, socially awkward and intensely logical puzzle enthusiast who publishes his work under the pseudonym Ludwig. When his identical twin James vanishes, John’s sister-in-law Lucy convinces him to assume James’s identity at the Cambridge police department to discover what happened. The only problem? His twin brother is nothing like John, and while John is brilliant when it comes to solving cases, he has a terribly difficult time impersonating his twin.
Despite John’s awkward social skills and unfamiliarity with police procedures, he proves remarkably gifted at solving murders, often noticing patterns and connections that more experienced detectives overlook.
As John investigates a different crime in each episode, he and Lucy gradually uncover clues about James’s disappearance and the possibility that his investigation involved people in positions of power. Some of these clues have clearly been left by James himself.
By the end of the season, John’s impersonation has come to an end, but James is still missing. John is offered a legitimate position as a crime scene consultant, allowing him to continue working with the police while secretly pursuing the unresolved mystery surrounding his brother.

Is Ludwig Worth Watching?
Let’s quote a famous and well-respected television critic with both a deep knowledge of British crime drama – and impeccable taste – to answer this question:
If I had to describe the new cozy mystery Britbox series Ludwig in just one line, it would be: Hercule Poirot meets Monk, with a puzzle-solving twist [. . . ]
Every episode of the show presents a fun new mystery that only Ludwig can solve. Fans of Agatha Christie-style cozy mysteries will have a blast puzzling these out alongside our endearing fake-detective. And the overarching mystery provides a deeper and more complex story to keep us invested [. . . ]
This is easily one of the best new mystery shows I’ve seen in a long time, and one of many great excuses to grab a BritBox subscription.
You’ve probably puzzled it out already, but these are quotes taken directly from my review of Ludwig Season 1, which I found utterly delightful in every way. I love a good cozy mystery, and this one does such a brilliant job of blending a procedural detective show with a larger conspiracy.
David Mitchell is wonderful in the title role and he’s backed by a stellar cast. I can’t recommend this show highly enough. I especially like it because it blends my love of TV shows, mysteries and puzzle games together into one very entertaining package. What a treat.
