LG Display Launches First OLED Screen Targeted At Esports
LG Display has launched the latest innovation to emerge from its seemingly hyperactive monitor division: The first OLED panel that’s been explicitly designed to cater for the ultra-demanding esports gaming monitor market.
The new LG Display panel’s 24.5-inch size fits with the 24-inch class of screen that’s become by far the mostly widely used screen size in esports circles. Its bid to take on LCD’s dominance of the esports world goes far beyond its mere size, though, of course; it also introduces a number of cutting edge competitive gaming features that go beyond OLED’s innate advantage where every pixel in its screen is able to produce its own light level and color tone completely independent of its neighbors.
For starters, the new panel boasts a massive 720Hz refresh rate. That’s the highest refresh rate in the OLED gaming monitor world, and is clearly capable of delivering an ultra smooth, ultra-responsive, ghost- and blur-free gaming experience backed up by a response time that’s claimed to be just 0.02ms. This response time is also the fastest in the OLED display world.
The new 24.5-inch display can sustain the 720Hz refresh rate even at full HD resolutions, too, thanks to a proprietary LG Display algorithm that spans all aspects of the screen, from panel design to the hardware driving system. Resulting in image features that are particularly well suited to the sort of FPS and racing games that most esports events tend to be built around. Examples provided by LG Display include clearly capturing the flash of a gun muzzle, or the sense of speed of a vehicle hurtling round a race track.
LG Display confirms that its new panel already has its first commercial monitor customer: Asus, with its launching-soon ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace. What’s more, this monitor (which carries a three-year burn-in warranty and is set to retail for $1,099) has already vindicated LG Display’s esports ambitions for its new display by being selected as the official esports monitor for the PGL CS2 Major Singapore 2026 competition – one of the biggest Counter-Strike 2 tournaments in the esports calendar.
With this initial success under its belt, LG Display is already looking to expand and accelerate its OLED display esports presence. In fact, in its own words, “the company intends to lead the gaming display market based on its full lineup, ranging from the 20-inch to the 40-inch class, with some products featuring its proprietary Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR) technology. To further widen the gap with rivals, moreover, LG Display is accelerating AI transformation (AX) across all areas of gaming display development.”
The head of LG Display’s Large Display Business Unit, Hyeon-woo Lee, confirmed his company’s ambitions as he wrapped up its latest announcement: “As a technology-driven company, we will lead the transition to OLED in the gaming monitor market as well as the mainstreaming of OLED in the global market.”
