Apple’s first folding phone is the iPhone Duo and it’s almost here — read this for full details of exactly what’s happening when including how to snag the exact model you want before pre-orders open. A new report says customers in-store will get a special customization extra when they buy it.

iPhone Duo: How the Personalized Boot Screen Works

What’s described as a “fun little touch,” in the report, means that when the buyer turns on the phone for the first time, instead of saying “Hello,” it adds the user’s name.

So, mine would say, “Hello, David,” which would be rather neat, I’d say.

The report came from Bloomberg ’s Mark Gurman in a post on X . But there are restrictions. First of all, it will only do it the first time you turn on the phone. Once you’ve set it up, it won’t do it ever again, obviously.

Also, it’s only set to happen in the U.S., nowhere else, and of course this is for iPhone Duo models (not other iPhones) bought from the Apple Store rather than picked up from a carrier. Oh, and it works in two languages only: English and Spanish, when, presumably it says “Hola, Javier,” for instance.

Here’s the full text of Gurman’s post.

“Fun little touch for the iPhone Duo launch: Apple retail stores will have a system to customize the boot of the device with the buyer’s name so it says “Hello, Mark” (for example) when it turns on for the first time. (US only, Duo only, English and Spanish),” he said.

The method to achieve this may rely on a previously announced system called Presto.

“It is not clear how Apple will implement the feature, or whether it will rely on Presto, the system Apple Stores already use to wirelessly update iPhones without removing them from their boxes. First reported by Gurman in 2023, Presto allows Apple retail employees to turn on an iPhone, install software updates, and turn it off again, all while the device remains sealed in its packaging,” 9to5Mac commented.

How to Prepare for iPhone Duo Pre-Orders

Pre-orders open on Friday, Oct. 16 but from Monday, Oct. 12, would-be buyers can get ready by choosing the color, storage level and other details such as whether or not they’ll trade a phone in. You can also specify payment method and carrier choice. Then, when pre-orders open, you’re ready to go.
