How Shannon Arvin Is Redefining The Legacy Of Keeneland Racing
Since opening its gates in 1936, Keeneland Race Course has remained a premier institution in Thoroughbred horse racing. Guiding this legendary Lexington, Kentucky landmark is its first female president and CEO, Shannon Bishop Arvin, who took the helm in 2021. Under her strategic direction, the historic facility continues to thrive, gearing up to host the prestigious Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships for a fourth time.
Impeccable Bloodlines and Past Performances Prepare Arvin for Leadership
In the world of Thoroughbred racing, lineage and past performance metrics dictate every major investment and wagering decision. When the Keeneland Association sought a new leader in 2021, evaluating Arvin’s own pedigree and track record made her selection an undeniable certainty.
Arvin’s deep-rooted history with Keeneland spans generations. Her grandfather, W.T. Bishop, served as the track's inaugural General Manager from 1936 to 1971, while her father, William T. “Buddy” Bishop, held influential roles including Director, Secretary, Trustee, and Legal Counsel. Arvin herself began working at the track in her youth, answering phones for sales and handling ticket sales. After earning her law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2002, she officially joined her father on Keeneland's legal counsel team.
When the executive vacancy opened, Arvin’s comprehensive resume made gender irrelevant; she emerged as a gate-to-wire victor in the race for the presidency. While breaking the glass ceiling was a historic milestone, stepping into the role was driven entirely by her lifelong passion for the institution.
Honestly, growing up here I never really thought about having a position like this. I have always loved Keeneland and enjoyed the people I have worked with over the years. I am honored to be the eighth President at Keeneland more so than being the first female President. I have never believed being a woman has carried any limitations for me. If anything, perhaps I can be an inspiration to others as all things are possible if you do the right things.
— Shannon Arvin, President and CEO of Keeneland and Chair of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association
Keeneland Thrives Under Modernized Vision and Record-Breaking Sales
Approaching its 90th anniversary, Keeneland continues to set industry standards as both a world-class racing venue and an elite auction house. Guided by Arvin, the facility has undergone significant paddock expansions and modern infrastructure renovations to elevate the guest experience. Meanwhile, commercial success has soared, highlighted by the historic 2026 September Yearling Sale generating a world-record $558 million, cementing it as the largest Thoroughbred auction ever recorded.
Balancing its storied reputation as a gentleman's track with contemporary innovations has kept spectator attendance at peak levels. Full racing fields, robust betting handles, and packed grandstands remain hallmarks of the Arvin era.
Embracing tradition is important at Keeneland, but we also realize the importance of finding ways to evolve and provide a great experience at all levels to our fans. Our goal is to create fans for life by making special memories for them here. We have been virtually sold out for all dates in the Spring and Fall and are eager to welcome the world for the Breeders’ Cup.

Beyond live racing, the auction ring continues to serve as a global incubator for future equine champions. Maintaining competitive purse structures and state-of-the-art stables remains a top priority for leadership.
The purse structure and facilities for our horsemen is of the utmost importance as we strive to always maintain a great experience for those that choose to run horses here. Our auction ring has been able to welcome people from all over the world who are looking for that next great champion in this wonderful sport. The number of horses in the sales here provides a deep bench of talent for all markets. Things really come full circle at the sales and it is a critical part of Thoroughbred racing.
— Shannon Arvin, Board of Directors member for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame
By blending traditional values with forward-thinking executive strategies, Shannon Bishop Arvin has secured Keeneland’s enduring prominence in the global equine industry.
At Keeneland our mission is the exact same as it was when my grandfather helped open the doors back in 1936. We want to be the model race track for fans and horsemen while at the same time maintain the best sales facility in the world.
