Google Photos Resolves 13-Month Pixel Edit Bug, But Concerns Linger
Google has finally deployed a resolution for a persistent Google Photos glitch that has plagued users for more than a year. Regrettably, however, this long-awaited patch may not be functioning universally for all impacted device owners.
Users who have struggled to share images from Google Photos via third-party applications can take solace in knowing they were not isolated in their frustration. Initially flagged as far back as September 2025, the defect blocked specific photos carrying minor modifications from appearing within the internal photo pickers of outside software.
The malfunction specifically activated whenever an individual altered an image inside Google Photos and overwrote the original file. Even trivial, non-destructive tweaks—such as a simple 90-degree rotation—were enough to trigger the error, whereas utilizing the Save as copy command bypassed the problem entirely. Consequently, corrupted files vanished from major platforms including Discord, Facebook, Gemini, Google Messages, Telegram, and WhatsApp. Notably, the glitch appeared exclusively confined to Pixel hardware.
The involvement of Google's proprietary tools like Gemini and Messages underscored the broad operational reach of the software failure.
Following persistent prompting from APKMirror founder Artem Russakovskii, the remedy seemingly materialized within version 7.97 of the Google Photos application. Optimistically, this update spells the final chapter for cumbersome workarounds requiring duplicate saves just to transmit an image. Affected consumers are strongly encouraged to refresh their Google Photos application to verify the fix.
Despite the rollout, Google has remained silent regarding the root cause of the error. Furthermore, contradictory reports indicate that version 7.99 may still harbor the flaw, suggesting the battle might not be entirely won. Documentation captured on October 31 demonstrated the issue persisting on unverified hardware, where edited screenshots remained accessible while modified rear-camera captures vanished from the native Files interface.
Google Photos Edit Bug: 13 Months From First Report To Fix
The most striking element of this software oversight is its remarkable longevity. A Pixel 10 Pro owner originally documented the concern on the Google support forum on September 11, 2025, eventually accumulating corroborating complaints from 63 other users.
Although a forum moderator escalated the ticket immediately, the warning languished until October 8, 2026, when a formal bug report was formally logged only to be dismissed as Won't Fix (Obsolete) on October 20 due to technical criteria. A legitimate corrective deployment ultimately arrived a full 13 months after the initial community warning.
What To Do If Your Edited Photos Are Still Missing
Individuals who continue to experience missing media should take comfort in the fact that Google acknowledges the malfunction and has actively pursued a remedy. In the interim, reliance on the Save as copy function remains the most reliable safeguard to guarantee edited visuals stay accessible across external applications.
