What if, instead of calling your primary care provider to schedule an appointment, or calling a tax office to make a payment, you could just have AI do it?

That’s the kind of capability that Google is hoping to bring to Android systems with a feature called Halo: it’s a type of monitoring, really, that streamlines the use of cutting-edge AI agents, and makes it more hands-free.

For many people, when it comes to using the actual automation facilitated by agentic models, the interface matters. You want something where you don’t have to actually go in and navigate a text system. You want to be able to use simple commands and keystrokes or haptic methods to keep in touch with your AI taskrabbits.

That’s what Halo is supposed to contribute to, in an ecosystem that Google is building right now.

The underlying technology is Google Spark, a 24/7 AI agent service. You can run these agents on your own computer, but when you have to keep that node running 24/7. So with Spark, you can run the agent on a virtual machine somewhere else, and just check in via your device.

Halo is the way that you access this remote operation. A little Google icon represents the API tool and harness that keep you tethered to your agent or agents.

“The idea is to keep users informed about what their AI assistant is doing without interrupting whatever they’re currently doing on their phone,” writes Adamya Sharma at Android Authority.

Technically speaking, the user would run Spark instances on Google’s Managed Agents API / Agent Platform, and monitor via Halo.

I’ve been thinking for several years now that we’re overdue for a new kind of interface, one where we will continue to look and face the physical world around us, instead of having to divert our attention to “talk” to phones with our thumbs. Halo may end up being a component of that. That AI agent frees up a lot of our attention, by doing the busywork on our behalf. Halo, combined with the above notification system, is an incremental step toward streamlining that management itself.

“Like it or not, AI and AI agents are here to stay,” writes Alexander Maxham at Android Headlines. “Android Halo isn’t expected to roll out anytime soon, though we could see an early version launch with the Pixel 11 in August. Google is known to save some features from the new version of Android for the QPR1 release, which launches with the new Pixels every year. This should mean that you’ll spend less time on your phone, and more time being present. Which is something we all struggle with.”

So various insiders and others are excited about this feature. We’ll see to what extent hands-off agentic LLMs catch on, and how quickly. Stay tuned.
