Galaxy S27 Report Reveals Samsung's New Display Upgrade
After regulatory filings confirmed the existence of the new Galaxy S27 Pro , Samsung is now planning to expand its privacy display to every Galaxy S27 model next year, according to new information.
Korean publication The Elec reports that Samsung is preparing four Galaxy S27 models, the base, Plus, Pro and Ultra, and all four will come standard with the privacy display feature that is currently exclusive to the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
For the uninitiated, those privacy screens you buy from Amazon for your phone or laptop? Samsung built that into the S26 Ultra’s display at a hardware level, using a filter layer that acts like tiny vertical blinds sitting inside the panel itself, physically blocking light from travelling sideways.
The blackout level can be adjusted for sideways viewers, from hazy to full blackout, and it can be localised too, if you only want your PIN code or certain notifications protected. Check it out in action in my video below.
It is, quietly, the best thing about the Galaxy S26 Ultra, because it's genuinely new technology solving a real problem: a distinct lack of privacy when you're using a phone with a giant screen.
This may be Londoner bias, but being crammed into the Central Line like sardines while using my phone, knowing only I can see the screen, has been a welcome privacy upgrade.
Clearly, I’m not the only one who thinks this because other Android manufacturers are building their own privacy screens too.
According to The Elec , Huawei is believed to have built its own privacy display solution into its tri-fold phone, using a different approach to Samsung’s but achieving a similar effect. Xiaomi is also working on something similar, though its version leans on software and OS-level controls rather than hardware. OPPO and vivo are reportedly working on their own privacy screen tech as well.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold Series Won’t Get Galaxy S27 Privacy Screen
The Elec writes that the privacy screen technology is expected to make its way to Samsung’s foldables. But not for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, which has been backed up by another recent leak .
The issue is that applying a privacy display to foldable panels means overcoming reduced resolution, lower brightness and higher power consumption whenever Privacy Mode is switched on. These are challenges that supposedly don't hit a flat, non-folding display anywhere near as hard.
That's a notable omission for a phone expected to match or exceed the S26 Ultra on almost every other spec, and to cost more doing it.
The technology clearly isn't finished evolving, though. As Market research firm Sigmaintell explained to The Elec , privacy mode is becoming a core differentiator for premium displays generally, and once the resolution and power hurdles are solved, foldables are next in line. Whether that happens in time for the Z Fold 9 or later is anyone's guess.
