The Toronto Blue Jays lost Bo Bichette after seven seasons when the longtime franchise shortstop left in free agency and signed with the New York Mets. Less than a year later, his future in New York has become one of the biggest questions looming over the next offseason.

Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million contract with opt-outs after both this season and next, giving him an opportunity to return to the open market much sooner than a typical long-term deal. The first option is now approaching after a disappointing debut season with the Mets.

“In the 2026 MLB season, Bichette’s first away from the Blue Jays, has not gone well at all,” Dan Bilicki wrote for the Toronto Sun . “His .263 batting average is the second-lowest in Bichette’s career — his worst was during an injury-plagued 2024 campaign. He’s also on track to record career lows in hits, doubles and home runs in seasons during which he played more than 81 games.”

Now Bichette has offered an intriguing clue about what his future in New York could look like.

In the only substantial message Bichette has sent about his possible future with the Mets, the star infielder indicated that he would be willing to play any defensive position in Queens moving forward.

“I would be willing to do whatever,” Bichette told the New York Post’s Mike Puma .

That willingness is notable, as Bichette has been moved to third base with the Mets this season after playing shortstop for his entire career in Toronto. While his offense hasn’t been a strong point this season, Bichette has displayed some significant value with his ability to man third.

However, Bichette did not indicate whether or not he actually expects to return to the Mets next year.

“Bo Bichette isn’t saying yet whether he plans on returning to the Mets next season,” Puma added. “Mainly, he’s open to a position change if he’s back with the team.”
