Throughout the campaign, the Toronto Sports franchise leaned heavily on its relief corps as mounting injuries to the starting rotation threatened their postseason ambitions.

While frontline arms like Cody Ponce, Shane Bieber, and Max Scherzer spent significant time on the sidelines, a resilient group of relievers stepped up to absorb a heavy volume of frames.

“The late innings are just fine with Louis Varland, Tyler Rogers and Braydon Fisher, but that trio has been ridden hard in 2026,” Keegan Matheson noted for MLB.com.

Although the taxing bullpen workload emerged as a growing concern down the stretch, the organization's depth ultimately allowed them to part ways with a veteran arm by midyear. Now, freshly removed from the conclusion of the season, a definitive update has emerged regarding that former contributor.

Connor Seabold Elects Free Agency After Royals Outright

Entering the open market once again, five-year major league veteran Connor Seabold officially chose free agency from the Kansas City organization, as reflected in the official league transaction log. The development transpired just days after the regular season wrapped up, immediately following an outright assignment by the Royals that concluded his brief tenure with the club.

“Seabold, 31 in January, was acquired from the Blue Jays in a June trade,” Darragh McDonald recalled for MLB Trade Rumors. “That didn’t work out for the Royals. Seabold allowed five earned runs in five innings before hitting the IL with a lat strain. He started a rehab assignment in September but was still on the IL at season’s end. He has a previous career outright, which gave him the right to elect free agency this time.”

Following a solid 2025 performance with the Tampa Bay franchise, the right-handed pitcher had been searching for consistency after bouncing between multiple clubs earlier in the year. Unfortunately, a fresh injury setback derailed his momentum before he could truly establish himself.

A Turbulent Journey Across Multiple Organizations

Seabold's 2026 season was defined by constant relocation. After inking a minor-league pact with Toronto in January, he briefly spent time in Detroit before making his way back to the Blue Jays in May. When Toronto designated him for assignment in June, Kansas City swooped in via trade.

The righty has previously logged major league service time for the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies, alongside stints across several other systems. His professional trajectory has been marked by a relentless pursuit of a stable, long-term role at the highest level of competition.

As he works to regain full health, Seabold will once again test the open market in search of a new home. While his next landing spot remains unwritten, free agency provides him with another pathway back to a big-league mound.
