The Fitbit Air is not the only new Fitbit fitness tracker likely to feature on shop shelves in the near future. A new model called the Fitbit Edge has been leaked, along with enough features to tell you almost everything you need to know about it.

If you’ve been waiting for the next Fitbit Charge or Versa, the Edge is effectively that. It’s not a full smartwatch like the Pixel Watch , but in return it provides longer battery life plus a good spread of health and fitness features, at a lower cost.

The key elements of the Fitbit Edge listed below are yet to actually be confirmed by Fitbit owner Google. However, with this level of information already out there, it can’t be too long before the official announcement arrives. Announcement details have not been leaked but I expect to see the Edge appear this year.

Fitbit Edge runs Fitbit OS

The software the Fitbit Edge runs tells you more than almost anything else about what sort of gadget this wearable is. It runs a version of Fitbit OS, as seen on the Sense and Versa series. While it may have changed a bit since the last iterations of those trackers, it means the Edge is a health and fitness wearable more than a smartwatch.

Fitbit’s Edge is expected to have a 1.34-inch OLED display, one whose style has more in common with something like the Fitbit Charge or Xiaomi Smart Band 10 than the Versa or Sense lines. It’s a lozenge shape, not the square style of old. This helps to further separate it from the Pixel Watch line. This is important for Fitbit’s positioning within the wider Google hardware ecosystem.

$179 Is Possible U.S. Fitbit Edge Pricing

EU and UK pricing for the Fitbit Edge has been leaked, offering a solid guide as to its likely to cost in the U.S.. You’ll pay £159 in the UK, 179 Euros in European countries. This suggests it’s likely to cost $179 in the U.S. based on the current pricing of the Fitbit Air.

Devices the scale of the Fitbit Edge aren’t large enough that you expect to see GPS inside them as standard. But at $180, you’d hope it would have that location-tracking feature, and according to the latest leaks it does have GPS. This means the Edge will be able to accurately track run and bike ride stats, and create maps of routes after the fact in the Google Health app.

ECG Is In the Fitbit Edge

Here’s an interesting one. The Fitbit Edge reportedly has ECG functionality, where heart behavior is monitored through the electrical signals passing through your body rather than the usual wearable method. That method uses light sensors to analyze the amount of light reflected off your wrist, in order to determine your heart beat pattern.

7 days/2 days Fitbit Edge battery life

In its default mode the Fitbit Edge will last around a week between charges. This will reportedly drop to just two days in the wearable’s “always on” display mode. That’s quite a severe drop even by the standards of these gadgets, where you typically see a halving of battery life. It suggests Google/Fitbit may not be aggressively maximizing always-on battery life by keeping the watch display simplistic and minimal, with very low brightness.

5ATM Water Resistance For All-Day Fitbit Edge Wear

No surprise here. The Fitbit Edge is likely to have 5ATM water resistance just like the Fitbit Air. It’s the industry standard for wearables, where 10ATM trackers are usually more expensive and more bulky. It’s enough to ensure the wearable won’t have to be removed very often, assuming diving is not one of your top hobbies.
