Elon Musk reclaimed his trillionaire status during Wednesday morning trading, propelled by a massive rally in both SpaceX and Tesla shares that injected an estimated $88 billion into his fortune within the first hour of the opening bell.

Surging Valuations Push Wealth Past $1 Trillion

Data from the Real-Time Billionaires rankings pinned Musk's total estimated net worth at $1.013 trillion as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The sudden wealth explosion stemmed from a more than 10% jump in SpaceX stock following a stellar third-quarter earnings report that crushed Wall Street expectations, alongside a 3% climb in Tesla shares ahead of its post-close earnings announcement.

Market momentum for Tesla was further amplified late Tuesday when Musk acknowledged during a SpaceX earnings call that leadership from both corporate entities are actively exploring a potential merger.

Stellar Earnings and Merger Speculation

Owning roughly 38% of SpaceX and an 11% stake in Tesla, Musk watched his financial empire expand rapidly as SpaceX revealed a staggering 161% year-over-year revenue increase. Notably, its artificial intelligence division exploded by 830%, while Starlink subscriber numbers surged from 1.6 million to 13.6 million throughout the third quarter. SpaceX also posted a $431 million operating profit specifically from its AI ventures.

Addressing the prospective merger during the call, Musk confirmed that special committees have been established by the boards of both companies to evaluate the combination. While he noted the deal is not guaranteed, he described the union as a logical and promising move.

Historic Giving and Tesla's Road Ahead

The financial milestone follows Musk's Monday announcement pledging to distribute one SpaceX share to every minor in America next year. Based on Friday's closing stock price, gifting a single share to each of the roughly 72 million Americans under 18 would total approximately $10.5 billion, marking his largest philanthropic endeavor to date.

Meanwhile, Tesla prepared to deliver its official third-quarter financial results. The electric vehicle manufacturer previously announced 486,532 deliveries for the quarter—surpassing the 463,761 consensus forecast among analysts, though marking a slight 2% dip compared to the same period last year. To stave off a third consecutive annual decline in delivery volumes, Tesla must clear at least 311,448 deliveries during the fourth quarter.

Musk continues to hold the undisputed top position on the global wealth leaderboard. Because his net wealth is tied heavily to his equity in Tesla and SpaceX, market volatility has caused him to repeatedly cross and fall back below the trillion-dollar threshold.
