Bungie has just put out a new trailer for the Destiny 2’s Monument of Triumph event, which releases on June 9 with huge overhauls of the game. Players are calling it one of the game’s best updates ever, and…it’s also going to be the one to end it. It’s been confirmed that Destiny 2 will cease development after this, and as such, I believe we have just watched the last trailer in Destiny 2 history. That’s…hard to process for an 11-year, 6,000-hour fan.

The trailer gives some indication about how the game will be forced to end. The main storyline of what was supposed to be the next saga has been slashed, and there will be no grand explanation of how we are supposed to “bind the Nine,” and wherever that plot was going.

Rather, Bungie seems to have positioned this as a “rest now, Guardian” finale, with no more worlds, literally, to conquer. Just retreading old ones from here. The Earth is said to be “healing” in the wake of recent developments (last we heard, the Nine were transmuting matter all over Earth, and we were supposed to be headed to Old Chicago to investigate).

The trailer shows off a lot of the new changes coming, including reprised weapons and new armor sets. Also, the return of Sparrow Racing, which players have wanted to see for years. Now, it’s the last new mode they’ll get.

The trailer, narrated by Ikora, says that we “decide what our future holds,” which some fans believe is yet another clue that if they just make enough noise, Sony will hear their pleas and reverse course. The longest of long shots, but people are desperate.

The one actual story development we can see is that the Traveler has returned to the Last City after the events of The Final Shape, where the Witness cut a rainbow triangle in it, and it appeared to be dead. Sort of. Maybe. I guess not. That was always somewhat confusing. Now, that triangle is gone, and the Traveler appears to just be…chillin. Now, it will watch over The Last City forever with the game now frozen in time.

It’s an emotional moment for Destiny fans, and the trailer certainly tugs at the heartstrings. The last Destiny 2 trailer ever out of dozens is hard to fathom. Many are hoping that this will not be the last Destiny trailer period, with the fabled Destiny 3 perhaps being made someday, or potential spinoffs that have been pitched, but not greenlit. It is a bit of a buzzkill to be reminded that there are new Destiny trailers to come in the form of Destiny Rising, the NetEase mobile game that has now, inexplicably, outlived the main series.

There aren’t any indications that Sony is about to change course on any of this, whether that’s continuing D2 or greenlighting Destiny 3 . So, this truly may be it, and this is the note we will end up. What a ride. What a shame.
