Destiny 2 may be dead, but players continue to show up to play what still exists in the game, and in larger numbers than when it was making new content recently. But past that, there is a new project underway that is…genuinely one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen happen with the game.

It is one of the most infamous moments in Destiny history, when Bungie announced that it could no longer support the enormous mountain of content the game was amassing. It instituted the “content vault,” which cut missions, destinations, PvP maps, strikes, raids, huge parts of the game. It’s the reason you can literally no longer play even the base campaign the game launched with. Now? Fans are digging up that graveyard.

The new endeavor has surfaced this cut content from the game, running it on private servers and allowing players to traverse these old Destiny 2 areas for the first time in years. Here’s the Leviathan, the raid area that was erased from the game (before small sections of it were brought back):

The catch, however, is that this is just exploration for now. There are no mechanics in these areas, no enemies, it’s just a way to explore. Still, this content was all meant to be lost to the corridors of time, yet it still exists, in a way. It’s a deeply impressive technical dive into a game that famously buried this stuff, and it will be released to the public in two weeks.

For how long? Well, that depends. The group has posted a bunch of “legal disclaimers” that they are not cracking or cheating to access this content, nor are they selling access to it. However, this is the video game industry, and doing things you’re not meant to with games can often be met with unjustified wrath. We have no idea if this will get on Bungie or Sony’s radar to the point where it gets patched or shut down. (Before anyone gets mad at me writing this article, this story has already been widely circulated among the whole community).

The mass content vault was inarguably one of the most controversial, and many would argue worst, decisions Bungie ever made, despite whatever technical explanation it gave at the time. In addition to erasing loads of content fans had paid for, it removed any real onboarding for the game by cutting the first two years of storylines and an introduction to the ongoing world. It was awkwardly replaced with a series of tutorials and mini-missions over time, but it was never the same.

It’s a cool project. I hope more and more can be uncovered and restored, and that the powers that be are content to leave it alone. Just let us have this, if nothing else.
