Destiny 2 has one hotfix left. One.

In the wake of the cutting of almost the entire Destiny 2 team after end-of-service was announced for the live title, those that remain are scrambling to get out a few final, key fixes that will be the game’s last. But things are going to be missed, and Bungie now has to take drastic steps of disabling some gear, or aspects of gear, permanently, rather than being able to have the time and testing to fix or rebalance them.

We have now seen this happen for the first time, where two new set bonuses for dungeon armor are going to be permanently disabled for Destiny 2 PvP. This is due to extremely rapid health and super generation, leading to supers in the second round of Trials or 1v1 fights dictated by one of the bonuses in question. Those are:

Grasp of Avarice Dungeon - 4 Piece Bonus - Overflowing Coffers

“While you have stacks of Untold Greed, Orbs of Power and Elemental pickups provide more of their respective energy, and Strand Tangles deal increased damage," Destiny 2 Team shared on X. "When your shields are broken, all stacks are converted into a fountain of Orbs of Power.”

Duality Dungeon - 4 Piece Bonus – Bittersweet

“When you stow a weapon, restore health based on the number of Built Bitter stacks lost," the company added.

These bonuses will stay active in PvE, as they have the ability to separate those out, but there is no indication these will ever be balanced for PvP so they’re just gone.

There are a number of other issues with Crucible balance that have been introduced with the sprawling final update, but again, outside of what can be finished by the next patch, likely out next week, Bungie simply cannot do it. There will be no ongoing support of the game, even at a baseline level.

We have yet to see anything be disabled for PvE. It’s not impossible, but that would be less likely. Bungie quickly got out a few nerfs to items or bugs that were trivializing every boss encounter in the game, but if there is one outlier overpowered meta, that’s just going to stay. And I don’t think Bungie would disable that, given that it would be…forever.

I’m a little amazed the final hotfix is happening at all. I know contractors who were supposed to test and implement the patch were laid off, so it wasn’t clear whether it would make it out. Somehow, it’s happening, but it’s a one-off.

I remain pretty stunned that Destiny 2 “maintenance mode” at the end of service will have effectively no maintenance at all. The servers are on, things like Xur, Trials and Iron Banner are now on an automated rotation, but that’s it. Wild. This isn’t Anthem we’re talking about, this is a game that’s almost nine years old now. But here we are, and we’ll see what else we might lose for good from here.
