‘Con Air’ And ‘National Treasure’ 4K Blu-Ray Details Revealed
Disney has happily delved into its massive (especially since buying 20th Century Fox) archive to bring film fans new 4K Blu-ray releases of two of actor Nicolas Cage’s most beloved films: Con Air and National Treasure .
The mighty Con Air sees Cage playing former US Army Ranger Cameron Poe as a parolee who has to take on a plane full of arch criminal scumbags when they take over the prisoner transfer plane he finds himself on. Director Simon West delivers the non-stop action, gleefully OTT performances and unusually sharp, witty script with suitable gusto, resulting in two hours of pure high-octane entertainment that’s been on my 4K Blu-ray ‘want’ list for years.
The 4K Con Air transfer will appear on a 66GB 4K Blu-ray disc, as usual with Disney releases. There are also 100GB discs that can be used for 4K Blu-ray video releases, but the 66GB disc should be enough to accommodate a film with a 115-minute running time.
The 4K visuals are confirmed to also enjoy a Dolby Vision high dynamic range master (which defaults down to HDR10 for people who don’t own Dolby Vision-capable TVs and 4K Blu-ray players), and the cutting edge visuals will be partnered by a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Con Air remains one of the loudest film experiences I’ve ever heard in a cinema, so hopefully this Dolby Atmos track will do the unapologetic massiveness of its sound mix proud.
National Treasure , meanwhile, sees Cage playing a historian and cryptologist racing against rivals to decipher an old map found on the back of the Declaration of Independence. This family classic is also going to be delivered on 4K Blu-ray with a Dolby Vision HDR Master to go with its 4K resolution, again accompanied by a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. With a running time of 131 minutes, though, it’s good to see Disney choosing to put this film on a 100GB disc rather than the 66GB alternative.
Both 4K Blu-ray releases are scheduled to ship on November 10 in the U.S., where both titles are going to be released exclusively in premium Steelbook editions. In the U.K., where the 4K Blu-rays of both films will go on sale from November 16, buyers will be able to choose between the Steelbook versions and cheaper editions with regular packaging.
The only features accompanying the Con Air release are two featurettes: A View From Above and The Destruction Of Las Vegas . Extra features for National Treasures are more numerous, and will comprise:
- Feature-length commentary track by director John Turtlebaub and actor Justin Bartha.
- Mission History: Inside The Declaration Of Independence featurette
- Alternate ending with optional director’s audio commentary.
- Deleted scenes with optional director’s audio commentary.
- Seven featurettes (and “much, much more”).
