Bungie Drops Hint About ‘Destiny 1’ Remaster And PC Release
Well, there is vagueposting, and there is just…posting, and Bungie’s Head of Project, Josh Deane, turned heads yesterday with a tweet that many believe may show a glimpse of Destiny’s future plans past the Destiny 2 unvaulting project already announced.
Deane quote tweeted a video by Flummoxed that shows Destiny 1 running at 4K, 60fps and 105 fov on PC, saying “Seems like a pretty game, wonder if it will do well…”
It’s significant because of both who he is and what the current state of what Destiny “revival” has become, with future updates in the works, though this is the first time this kind of thing has been hinted at outright. The idea here is that Destiny 1 could be receiving some sort of remaster after its release in 2014, combined with a PC launch, where the looter shooter was never ported.
Even before Destiny 2 died, there was always the sense that this could be the sort of project that would happen eventually, given that Sony tends to remaster everything under the sun, if not multiple times, and as a big IP it now owns, Destiny 1 might be a prime candidate for that. The technical process as to how this would happen, and who would actually work on such a project, remains unknown, though Sony would likely outsource it to…somewhere.
The D1 remaster was not hinted at in the initial Deane announcement about the unvaulting, which also teased “new games” in the universe in the future. Obviously, a Destiny 1 remaster is not a “new” game, and as such I don’t think it would count under that category. So, it would be yet another way that Sony and Bungie are breathing life into Destiny as a franchise, even if for now, that’s revitalizing/returning old content.
While nothing is confirmed at all through a single tweet, exploring the idea further, the goal for players would be to have the game not just be visually updated (and it looks gorgeous in the Flummoxed video above), but also retain quality of life improvements from Destiny 2, as we often see when other games are remastered. It would be bizarre, for instance, to go back to a game where you cannot mantle ledges.
There are limits, as we’re not going to start sticking aspects and fragments or tiered gear into Destiny 1 , for instance. Nor do I imagine this would be the launch of some parallel track live game with consistent updates. The goal would be, of course, to get The Taken King and Rise of Iron along with this, however, the former being the key part of the entire era of that game. That said, so much of Destiny 1 has been ported into Destiny 2 at this point, there’s probably only half the game left we haven’t experienced through D2 gameplay. The holy grail, however, would be finally getting Wrath of the Machine, the lone, not-ported raid, finally playable (though if you want to play it in Destiny 2 , that may be possible soon …)
I will take any project that keeps the Destiny IP alive and producing new content, whether that is old content remastered or not. As a fan, I probably haven’t played Destiny 1 in any meaningful capacity in 8-9 years, and even if it was just a brief visit to the story campaigns and a bit extra, that sounds great to me. Hopefully we’ll get more confirmed info soon.
