Summertime travel shows no signs of slowing down—but new data from Expedia and Vrbo suggests that American travelers are approaching holiday decisions with a stronger focus on value and savings than ever before.

The latest booking and search trends coming out of the travel booking platforms indicates that travelers are becoming more strategic in how they search for and book travel, prioritizing budget-friendly options without sacrificing a well-deserved break.

According to Expedia, demand for lower cost travel has increased majorly over the past year. The data shows that searches using budget filters have surged over 1,265% year over year with interest in economy airfares also rising 120% compared to last year.

Travelers are also showing renewed interest in vacation packages that can help simplify expenses and keep travel budgets more cohesive. The Expedia report shows that searches for all-inclusive stays have grown 50%, showing that traveler are looking for a more predictable cost when traveling.

It’s also worth noting that loyalty rewards have picked up year over year. OneKeyCash redemptions have increased by 35%, indicating that travelers are looking to reduce out of pocket expenses and stretching their budget even further this summer.

Vrbo sees similar trends. The vacation rental platform reported that 37% of summer vacation rental bookings are on discounted properties, while travelers also appear to be delaying booking decisions with the intention of finding better last-minute deals.

These data points suggest a broader shift in summer travel behavior. Economic pressure is clearly top of mind for many Americans but rather than a decrease in holiday travel, travelers have become more deliberate and intentional with their planning by seeking discounts and using rewards programs to squeeze in a holiday that doesn’t involve going over budget or into debt for a holiday.
