The Toronto Blue Jays head into the winter facing important questions about how to reshape their roster after a disappointing end to their season. With several veterans reaching free agency, the front office must decide which pieces of the club’s recent core can help Toronto return to contention in 2027, where some new faces might be able to contribute and which players could be convinced to return.

Among all of those decisions, though, the future for veteran slugger George Springer stands out.

The outfielder signed a six-year, $150 million contract with Toronto before the 2021 season, becoming a defining addition in the franchise’s attempt to build a contender. His departure would leave the Blue Jays searching for both production and leadership as they consider their next steps.

“George Springer once represented the beginning of something big and new,” MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson wrote as Springer wrapped up his final game of the season . “Six years after Springer signed the $150 million deal that announced the Blue Jays to the rest of baseball again, it’s his final day in this uniform.”

And while it’s all but certain that Springer will be leaving the Blue Jays organization, it seems like a good bet that he’s going to retire from the game altogether as well.

George Springer’s Toronto Blue Jays Teammate Sends Retirement Message After Season’s End

One of Springer’s former Blue Jays teammates, Whit Merrifield, believes he has most likely reached the end of his career now that his contract with the Blue Jays is concluded.

“Toronto welcomed him in and he found another home in Toronto and the fact that that’s over, and if he’s going to continue to play he’s going to have to do something like that again, is emotional for him,” Merrifield, who played with Springer in 2022 and 2023, said during a recent 6ix Inning Stretch Podcast episode . “If I had to bet … it would be that George is probably done.”

Springer’s time in Toronto brought highs and setbacks, including injuries that interrupted his availability. Yet his importance to the franchise extended beyond his numbers and he was a key leader in the team’s run to the World Series last year, making his future a meaningful question for a team preparing to rework parts of its roster.

Toronto Blue Jays Face Major Offseason Decisions Amid Goerge Springer’s Exit

Toronto’s front office has other significant choices to make. Other veterans, including Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber, are also entering free agency and the club must determine how much of its recent core to retain while addressing its roster needs.

Ultimately, many of the team’s players are set to return, though Springer’s absence will leave a notable gap in the outfield.

“The bulk of the Blue Jays roster is seemingly set for 2027, with the entire infield – catcher Alejandro Kirk, first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., second baseman Ernie Clement, shortstop Andres Gimenez and third baseman Kazuma Okamoto – under contract for next season,” Mark Feinsand noted for MLB.com . “The outfield is where Toronto will likely focus its attention this offseason, looking to add a power bat to put out there with (Brett) Bateman and Nathan Lukes.”

For now, Merrifield’s comments have added another layer of uncertainty to the Blue Jays’ offseason. Springer’s decision remains his to make, but Toronto must prepare for the possibility that a major figure in its recent history has played his final game with the club.
