The Toronto Blue Jays are heading into a consequential offseason after a disappointing 2026 campaign.

With several decorated veterans from the team’s World Series run last year — including George Springer, Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber — now reaching free agency, Toronto’s front office has plenty of decisions to make as it attempts to reshape the roster.

“The only certainty, whenever the game’s next collective bargaining agreement is set, is that the Blue Jays will be different the next time they take the field, testing the legacy built once Springer signed and spurred along by Scherzer among so many others,” as Shi Davidi put it for Sportsnet .

In his first extended comments about his own looming contract decision, Bieber sent a clear message to the Blue Jays’ front office.

After a season that was interrupted by injury and ultimately ended with Toronto outside of the postseason, Bieber reflected on his future as he hit free agency.

“The year definitely didn’t end the way that I had hoped or anticipated for it to end,” Bieber told sports journalist Lindsay Dunn last week . “I’ve never really been a part of a team that was kind of this snakebitten.”

But despite the disappointment, Bieber made it clear that he would like to return to the team on a new contract and seemed to go as far as indicating he expects a reunion at this point.

“We’ll just look forward to making a deep run next year,” Bieber added. “And I don’t know what’s to come of it, right… but I trust it’ll be what it’ll be and I’ll end up in the right spot. And I definitely hope that that’s here again because I’ve enjoyed my time, my family’s enjoyed our time so much.”

That is a significant message for a Blue Jays organization that must determine whether Bieber remains part of its pitching plans.

Bieber returned to Toronto after exercising a $16 million player option for 2026 , giving himself another season to rebuild his value following Tommy John surgery. He had posted a 3.57 ERA across seven regular-season starts for Toronto in 2025 after returning from the procedure and being acquired at the trade deadline. He also made five postseason appearances that year, including four starts.

The 2026 season was considerably more complicated. Bieber made just 11 starts and finished with a 4.37 ERA over 55.2 innings. He was placed on the injured list in August with right teres major inflammation.

The Blue Jays retained Bieber through the 2026 trade deadline despite his expiring contract. Bieber’s history gives Toronto reason to consider another chapter. He won the American League Cy Young Award in 2020 after leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts, and he was a two-time All-Star before leaving the Cleveland Guardians.

Now, though, the decision belongs to both sides. Bieber cannot guarantee where he will pitch next season, but his message to the Blue Jays’ front office is unmistakable: if the opportunity is there, he would like to come back.
