Best Christmas Markets in Europe 2026 — Top Destinations Revealed
As the nights draw in and temperatures fall, Europe’s Christmas markets offer a reason to travel in winter. But with more than 3,000 markets in Germany alone and thousands more across the continent, choosing where to go can be difficult. European Best Destinations asked independent journalists from leading publications to shortlist 40 markets, which were then ranked by a vote of 11,648 travelers from Europe and beyond. Here are the markets that came out on top, according to the organization’s annual ranking.
1. Advent Bazilika, Budapest, Hungary. Nov 13, 2026–Jan 1, 2027.
Advent Bazilika in Budapest won European Best Destinations’ Best Christmas Market award in 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024. Now named the organization’s Most Beautiful Christmas Market in Europe for 2026, it is clearly a market worth visiting. Nearly 100 Hungarian artisans sell handmade decorations and gifts around the basilica on Szent István Square. Food stalls serve traditional chimney cake ( kürtőskalács ), Hungarian sausages and mulled wine. Visit during the day to browse, then return after dark for the basilica’s illuminated façade and light projections.
Under director Tibor Krsko, Advent Bazilika has developed over more than 15 years into an internationally recognised market, while retaining strong local support and charitable initiatives. The market’s central location makes it easy to combine with Budapest’s thermal baths, historic cafés, the Danube and other sights. Nearby Vörösmarty Classic Xmas, run by the same organizers, offers another festive stop.
Where to stay: District V, near St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Danube, for easy access to the market and central Budapest. A great choice is the Four Seasons, Gresham Palace , a Belle Epoque gem.
