Some of the biggest new headlines in the tech world today have to do with a change in U.S. policy on sourcing robots and power inverters. This has been characterized as the U.S. “throwing the first punch in the robot wars,” as the FCC changes its classifications and supply chain protocols.

In coverage by Adam Pond at AI Magazine , Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, Chairman of the Select Committee on China, provides the U.S. legislator’s rationale:

“It is likely that one day robotic technology will be in Americans’ homes and workplaces, and we must protect our country by keeping out Chinese robots with backdoors that share sensitive data with the CCP.”

It is likely, indeed. China is far ahead on humanoid robots, with firms like Unitree on the vanguard of cutting-edge tech. And although U.S. firms had been lobbying for the government to ban Chinese humanoids, it turns out that they still need to be able to get the parts.

Most of the news that you’ll find focuses on a couple of distinctions: one, that U.S. firms really didn’t want Chinese robots on the U.S. market, and two, that the U.S. government action primarily focuses on full robots and not parts.

But this IEEE Spectrum piece points to the flip side of the equation with this tagline:

“The catch: American robot makers still need Chinese-made components”

“If the proposed ground robot ban were to move lower down the value chain, preventing American robot makers from buying Chinese-made components, those companies might have a harder time fulfilling U.S. demand,” writes Lucas Laursen, articulating the less publicized element of this move.

I was remembering how just a while ago, the Maginot line was chips, not robot parts.

In fact, when I looked back to last August, I had been reporting on just this: the calculus by which the U.S. and China were competing on GPUs, and how each side wanted to manipulate the international sale of Nvidia products.

So in this case, the past is prologue. What’s different is that the new battleground is robotics. As Moolenaar said, it is likely that soon, robots will walk, work, and live among us.

Supply Chain Pressure Points

One of the best reports on the new issue with robots comes from our own Forbes contributor John Koetsier. In his article , titled “Making Humanoid Robots without a Chinese Supply Chain … Possible?” Koetsier includes a visual chart that treats four components: permanent magnets, encoder/position sensors, precision bearings, and driver boards/power electronics. Of those, the Chinese have a share of around 90% on permanent magnets, and 35% on the three others.

So if you need the magnets, it looks like the Chinese have some leverage. But they’re also just far ahead on the actual design and cranking out of humanoids that can walk, talk, sing and dance with the best of us.

“If your actuators require rare earth magnets,” Koetsier adds, “China has most of the global supply. And, clearly, it is getting increasingly selective in how it exports those to the rest of the world.”

Balancing this commentary, Koetsier continues:

“There are also things that western companies potentially have better access to: Nvidia chips, other high-end AI chips, plus their own proprietary physical AI foundation models. By the Times’ own reporting, UBTech imports chips that control its robots’ movements. And Unitree relies on Nvidia simulation software to train its robots and just announced a partnership to build robots around Nvidia chips and software for reasoning and decision-making.”

He ends with this assessment:

“The reality is that it’s really hard for anyone to make good robots that do worthwhile work at reasonable speed and accuracy, don’t break down, and have scalable physical intelligence to do more and more work over time. Component sourcing is hard, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Vertical integration is one of the ways to solve it, though it can be expensive and risky. Those challenges exist in China and in America, and everywhere else on the planet where companies are racing to build robots that are both reasonably priced and good workers.”

In other words, there’s no single silver bullet.

In other coverage, Robot Today presents us with “the full map,” including this 4-tier plan for decoupling:

Maybe this kind of directive will pave the way for more independence.

At the same time, in greater context, there’s all of this other stuff going on, too .

So keep an eye on changes to domestic production, protectionism, and other forms of regulation, and the Sino-U.S. “AI war” as 2026 winds down.
