If you’re a true Ariana Grande fan, you already know the pop star is midway through a five show Brooklyn residency on her Eternal Sunshine Tour. From her Wicked press tour to her current musical era, Grande has built a makeup reputation that fans study frame by frame. If you’re one of the many watching the concert highlights from your couch instead of the arena floor, there’s good news: you can recreate the look at home, and the person who actually creates it for her is willing to explain how.

Michael Anthony is the celebrity makeup artist behind Grande’s face for the tour, known for his precise complexion work and his ability to build a "muse" style look around each client’s features. His client list also includes Katy Perry, Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga and Lindsay Lohan so he is well versed in creating looks that are iconic and glamorous. Below, he walks through how he builds Grande’s signature look using her own brand, r.e.m beauty so that fans can recreate it at home.

Ariana Grande’s Skin Is Built With Ample Prep

Grande is known for flawless, luminous skin, and Anthony says the foundation of that look is prep. He reaches for the brand’s dreamglow highlight serum first. "I usually apply foundation in sheer to medium coverage in multiple layers so that it is very stable, setting it with loose powder and a powder puff locks it in," he explains over email. To finish, he relies on a setting spray. "I use setting spray, which actually activates the shimmer and keeps the glam looking fresh all the way to the end of the show."

When it comes to complexion, Anthony keeps the product list short. "We just use foundation, concealer and some contour around the perimeter of the face and under the cheekbones," he adds. Skipping extra steps, he says, keeps the finished look from feeling too busy and helps it read as one cohesive face rather than a stack of separate products.

Recreating Ariana Grande’s Iconic Doe Eye Look

Grande’s eyes are one of the most recognizable parts of her look, and Anthony says the effect comes down to placement rather than product volume. "For Ari’s beautiful doe eyes, we like to adjust the placement of the crease a bit farther out near the temples to accentuate the lift of the eyes," he says. For a detail that reads well on camera, he uses a liner brush with shadow from an r.e.m. beauty eyeshadow quad , applied just at the very corner of the eye. He also tight-lines the waterline and extends the line outward in a flat direction so it stays parallel with the natural lash line, which he says gives the eye its most lifted effect.

Ariana Grande’s Lips Add To An Overall Balanced Look

To keep the eyes as the focal point, Anthony pairs them with a soft, pale pink lip using the brand’s lip stain marker in the shade “Booked N Busy” , topped with a plumping lip gloss. "It keeps the lips shiny and hydrated, but understated, so that the eyes do more talking, but the look remains very feminine and soft," he says. Grande does her own lips using that same marker and taught Anthony a trick along the way. She applies the marker around the perimeter of the lips, then adds a small dash in the center of the lower lip before layering gloss on top, which softens into a subtle, fuller looking pout once blended.

Anthony’s approach to sculpting is about patience rather than heavy product. "I’d like to take my time contouring around the perimeter of the face, behind the ears and under the jawline, so that features stand out and don’t read as flat under the bright lights," he says. For a natural flush, he warms cream blush or lipstick on the back of his hand, then stamps it onto the face with a brush rather than blending it in directly. Working this way, he says, merges the color into the base makeup instead of smearing it, giving the finish a natural glow that looks like it’s radiating from within. Try any one of these steps on their own, from the tightlined flat liner to the warmed cream blush trick, and you’ll already be closer to Ariana Grande’s stage ready glow.
