With rumors of October fulfillment pre-orders selling out quickly next week, there’s no doubt that Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the Duo, is going to be a popular device this fall. So far, Apple isn’t bringing official MagSafe accessories to the table. That means it’s a great time to be an iPhone accessory maker.

Since the Duo is just a hair shorter than any other iPhone currently on the market, the vast range of accessories that have “just worked” since MagSafe was introduced for the iPhone six years ago don’t actually fit the back of the device.

What’s baffling is that, other than their Duo Case, Apple hasn’t announced a single MagSafe accessory for the iPhone Duo. No wallet. No battery pack. It’s a notable problem, considering the wide range of accessories currently available for all other models.

I’d been hoping that things just weren’t ready to be shown off at the keynote and they’d emerge before the Duo shipped to customers on October 23. But preorder prep starts next Monday and other than two cases, Apple has nothing on the MagSafe Accessories page for the Duo.

What We Need Besides Cases

Batteries, I’m willing to give a pass…for now. While I’ve used the official iPhone Air battery practically every day since I purchased it, that was a bit of a given, considering the battery deficit of the device. With the Duo, no one really knows how robust the battery life will be or if it will be able to keep up with the aggressive need of three screens. Time will tell if portable batteries will even be needed. That said, there hasn’t been an iPhone yet that didn’t need a battery pack at some point. Even if it’s just to have on hand in case of an emergency, people want backup power on the go.

But before the case for batteries is justified, the more immediate need is MagSafe wallets. For myself and a lot of iPhone users, it’s been nearly six years since we last carried a wallet around separate from our phones. And while there are some very nice slim wallets on the market, there’s something satisfying about a streamlined carry, not to mention the peace of mind that comes with your phone and wallet being in the same spot.

So if you’re getting an iPhone Duo in the next couple of weeks and don’t want to switch back to carrying around a separate wallet in your pocket, what’s to be done? While there aren’t many options out there yet, in a very “Life, uh, finds a way” moment, three companies have popped up to tackle the problem head-on since the Duo was announced.

I was lucky enough to get hands-on with a prototype of Frenchie’s Speed Wallet Duo so that I could see exactly how it stacked up with existing MagSafe wallets. Side-by-side next to my trusty Nomad Leather Mag Wallet (in Olde Dublin leather), you can clearly see that it’s just a tiny bit shorter. While cards poke out of the top a bit since the wallet itself is shorter, they’re still secure.

Frenchie has designed their Speed Wallet to hold six cards overall: four in the front pouch, accessible via a pull tab, and two more on the inside. That’s right, there’s an interior to Frenchie’s solution that lets the wallet serve as a kickstand for the Duo (or any other iPhone with a MagSafe connection). It does make the wallet a bit thicker than average, however. Frenchie handcrafts their wallets from full grain Italian leather, so it should stand up to plenty of abuse and wear nicely over time. Pre-orders are up now, at $84 a pop.

Moft Brings Origami to the Duo

If leather isn’t your thing, or you prefer a slim wallet solution that’s still multifunctional, then Moft has you covered with their latest Snap Fold wallet . Coming in a nice variety of contrasting finishes, the wallet fits five cards and leverages the company’s signature origami folding tech so that the wallet doubles as a stand in a wide variety of orientations. It’s extremely useful and replicates the functionality of Apple’s offering without having to put a case on your Duo.

It’s the same wallet you’ve seen from Moft time and again, but shrunk down just a tad to fit the Duo, with a side-loading orientation for your cards. At $50, it’s a relatively inexpensive solution that should be just as durable as the leather options. Now if only I could muscle-memory myself into remembering more than a single fold orientation for Moft’s products…

Turn Your Duo Into a Billfold

If you want to go the full old school billfold route, look no further than Nomad’s Traditional Folio case . Crafted out of their Horween leather, it’s the nicest material you can wrap your new iPhone Duo in. Since it’s doing double-duty, there isn’t quite as much room, with space for just three cards on the front inside flap. Still, if you don’t need much more than your ID, a credit card, and insurance, then that should be plenty. The cutout is recessed as well, so the cards shouldn’t mar the front screen of the Duo. Plus you’ll get the full protection of a sturdy leather case with anodized aluminum accents. Since it’s a fancy full leather case, it’s also the most expensive option at $129.

But Wait There…Isn’t More

Sadly, that’s it for now. Though I’m confident that more manufacturers will step up as they get the Duo in hand, even if Apple fails to deliver. Even before launch, there are several Duo case options floating around.

Spigen , for instance, teased a classic jelly iBook case on social media when the Duo was announced, asking if anyone was interested. Given how they’ve paired their classic Mac cases with matching wallets , I’m sure there will be accessories to be had. Though, honestly, even if there isn’t I’m still totally getting the case, because who doesn’t want their phone to look like a classic iBook? Until it launches, the company’s 1mm Nano Pop case looks like an excellent contender for bringing a bit of style to the two-tone blandness of the Duo.

Talking to folks at Ridge, the Duo is definitely on their radar and we’ll hopefully see offerings from them beyond cases. Their Ridge Power Bank (in this eye-popping GT colorway), would make the Duo an unstoppable travel powerhouse, with a Watch charger built right in.

While mostly it’s just cases for Apple’s foldable on the market right now, if manufacturers can develop cases, then they have all the measurements they need to develop MagSafe accessories that fit the Duo’s unique geometry. Let’s hope that pays off in the coming weeks.
