Apple iOS 26.6.2 New iPhone Software: Should You Upgrade?
There’s now no possibility of another iOS 26 release for the iPhone until after the iOS 27 cycle begins on Monday, Sept. 14 — read full details of which iPhones are compatible and what’s coming here . This last hurrah for iOS 26 might be expected to just cover security issues, but that’s not the case. There’s not a single security change in this release.
This post has the initial thoughts on the new release and I’ll be updating this post over the coming week before adding my final verdict on Friday, Sept. 18.
Who Is It For And How Do You Get It?
Like most releases in this current iPhone cycle, this update is for every iPhone running iOS 26, that is, all phones from the iPhone 11 onwards. To upgrade to the new software, simply open the Settings app on the iPhone, choose General, then Software Update. Next, tap on Download and Install, and the software will download from there. This download is small, 704MB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max but if you’re updating from an earlier iOS 26 version, your download will be bigger and take longer to install.
There’s one important fix in this release, and it’s designed to fix an issue that prevents downloading a software update over a mobile data connection. Since software updates happen frequently for apps as well as the phone system, it’s important to be able to download over cellular connection, obviously. You can read more details of this release here .
Apple iOS 26.6.2 Security
There are no security updates here at all. Expect plenty to arrive in iOS 27.
Apple iOS 26.6.2 Initial Reactions
Some users pointed out that they couldn’t download the update on a mobile connection. While some found this annoying, others pointed out that since this is the exact issue being fixed that it seems like a necessary update! When you update, please do so over Wi-Fi, is my advice.
One Redditor noted that they received the notification of an available update sooner than they usually did, and speculated that this meant the bug is more serious than it seems. I have no knowledge of this but being unable to download over cellular is inconvenient.
Apple iOS 26.6.2 Initial Verdict: Update
There are few if any complaints of new issues rearing their heads, and the benefit of the update is clear. Being unable to download an update is frustrating, especially if it’s an app you need right now. While it’s unlikely you’d try to use cellular connection to download the multi-gigabyte iOS 27, it’s better to get this sorted pronto. I’ll update this post with the final verdict on iOS 26.6.2 on Friday, Sept. 18.
