Apple Breaks Taboo With New Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro
In a historic reversal of a stance once championed by Steve Jobs, Apple has officially unveiled its very first touchscreen laptop. The redesigned MacBook Pro arrives in familiar 14-inch and 16-inch footprints, yet introduces groundbreaking OLED technology and full multitouch capabilities to the Mac ecosystem for the very first time.
The Advantage of OLED Technology
By shifting to OLED panels, the hardware delivers significantly richer blacks and more brilliant, lifelike colors compared to the traditional LCD and LED screens found in earlier generations. Because these panels are inherently slimmer and lighter, Apple successfully trimmed the weight of the lineup: the 14-inch variant registers at just 3 pounds, while the larger 16-inch configuration weighs 4 pounds.
Multitouch Reinvents MacOS Interaction
The introduction of multitouch functionality allows users to navigate the display just as they would on an iPad or iPhone. Operators can pinch-to-zoom on images, quickly flick windows out of view, and directly manipulate professional creative suites such as Final Cut Pro using their fingertips rather than relying exclusively on a cursor.
I got brief hands-on time with the laptops, and the new displays are definitely impressive. They get up to 2000 nits of brightness, and the deeper blacks allow the screen to show contrast in ways previous MacBooks could not.
Gesture controls feel instantly intuitive for anyone familiar with iOS, and Apple has thoughtfully optimized macOS interface elements to accommodate touch input, featuring compact buttons that dynamically expand when a finger approaches. Connectivity remains robust with three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, MagSafe charging, an HDMI port, a headphone jack, and an integrated SDXC memory card slot.
Pricing and Processing Power
Driven by next-generation M5 Pro or M5 Max silicon, the new MacBook Pro models begin at $2,899 for the 14-inch iteration and $3,399 for the 16-inch version. A comprehensive review will follow in the coming weeks.
