Many major Netflix series have ended recently, from Stranger Things to Squid Game. Other big hits like Wednesday have lost enormous amounts of their audience between seasons. And so, Bridgerton , which boasts some of the most-watched seasons in Netflix history, is expanding its universe to try and fill some gaps.

Netflix has announced that a new prequel series in Bridgerton lore will be coming to the service, albeit with no date announced, similar to how the greenlit season 5 of Bridgerton also does not have a date pinned down, which may be as late as 2028.

The as-of-yet unnamed show will follow a young Lady Violet and her eventual romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. It will be the second spinoff prequel series after Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story . That was released in May 2023, and performed quite well, outpacing a few seasons of the main show and at the time, landing in Netflix’s all-time most-watched series list , so it’s possible this second outing also does well.

There is no full book about the Violet and Edmund romance, rahter it’s touched on in Violet in Bloom , a short story, which may provide the source material here. The series is being written by Shonda Rhimes herself. The last time she did that? Queen Charlotte.

The fact that more Bridgerton characters would be getting spinoffs or prequels is not a shock, given that it was discussed when Queen Charlotte debuted and was confirmed in January 2026. What we do not know is which actors might be playing the young Violet and Edmund, and, again, we do not have a release date or even a release window. It takes about two years for new seasons of Bridgerton to be released, and the question is whether this show would air before or after the likely arrival of Bridgerton season 5 in 2028. Logic would dictate after, if this is only being announced now.

Bridgerton viewership has been up and down over the years, but it still has seasons 1 and 3 on Netflix’s all-time list with 113 million and 105 million views, respectively. There are eight core novels in the series focused on different couples, and there are additional side-stories like the ones we’ve mentioned. In short, if Netflix wants Bridgerton material indefinitely, it has it. Though it’s not a cheap show and would still require solid viewership to continue for all these years to come. We’re talking deep into the 2030s if all of it is trying to be adapted, including side projects like this new one.
