Android Circuit: Galaxy S27 Pro, RedMagic Terminal & Huge Batteries
Reviewing the major developments and headlines shaping the mobile ecosystem this week, our weekly Android roundup explores groundbreaking hardware leaks, software features, and platform updates.
Latest Galaxy S27 Pro Specs Leak
One of the standout features in last year’s Galaxy S26 Ultra was the privacy screen. The hardware built directly into the display looks set to not only continue with the Galaxy S27 Ultra, but also show up in the new smaller premium tier of the Galaxy S27 Pro. Contributor Janhoi MacGregor takes a closer look at the new details:
It was comfortably the best feature on the Galaxy S26 series and, in my book, it remains the best smartphone hardware invention this year. For the uninitiated, the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s privacy display stops people around you from reading your screen. With it switched on, anyone looking at the phone from the side sees a dark, unreadable screen, while you still see everything clearly from the front.
The Galaxy Is Watching You Sleep
Samsung has announced that, following the approval of US and South Korean regulators, its Sleep Apnea feature will be available on the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, the latter being the first smart ring to feature this tracking:
The enhanced algorithm analyzes a user’s vitals during sleep in greater depth and now provides insight into the level of breathing disruptions detected — going beyond the previous sleep apnea risk assessment to deliver more comprehensive, meaningful information that helps users better understand their condition, which can lead to productive conversations with healthcare professionals.
The Googlebook Takes An Unusual Approach To An Older Form Factor
What comes after the Googlebook? Google’s reimagining of the clamshell laptop running Android is moving towards large-screened devices, including convertibles and detachables. That would mean running with just a touch display and a large screen, with no input device except on-screen controls. Abner Li shares his perspective:
With Googlebook OS coming to tablets, a broader question is what operating system high-end Android tablets will use going forward. There certainly should still be space for tablets running Android, but Googlebook OS in theory allows for a more desktop-like experience as the company keeps iterating.
RedMagic 12 Pro Offers A Terminal
While it may pass most owners by, power users will undoubtedly welcome the addition of Terminal support to the latest Android builds. The upcoming RedMagic 12 Pro will serve as one of the very first devices to carry this feature. Nicholas Sutrich highlights this welcome software addition:
Linux Terminal support has been slowly building on Google platforms. Googlebooks sort of supports it, and now it appears that more Android phones will support it as well. The implementation on the Redmagic 12 Pro seems slightly different from what’s on Exynos-powered Samsung phones, as you cannot adjust the disk size (it’s locked at 132GB available), but you can adjust the amount of memory available for the terminal to use.
More Power Than You Could Possibly Imagine
Could Honor actually bring a massive 15,000 mAh smartphone battery to the commercial market next year? That is the bold claim recently highlighted by GSM Arena. Although specific model numbers remain under wraps, with Honor already offering a 12,500 mAh cell in its portfolio, an upward leap appears inevitable in the hyper-competitive specs race:
The tipster claims that Honor expects the smartphone featuring this battery will deliver up to a week of use on a single charge. The phone is expected to launch sometime next year. While the tipster has not revealed which smartphone will feature the massive battery, Honor could use it on the Power3 or the Win RT3. The tipster also revealed that this would be a high-density cell and the overall weight and thickness of the phone will not be excessive.
Additionally, Google has confirmed that native third-party developer integration for Quick Share will roll out in 2027 for both Android and iOS environments. Abner Li notes:
The Quick Share SDK is coming in the first half of 2027. Developers will be able to integrate file share functionality directly into their apps instead of requiring users to first open the system Share sheet and launch the fullscreen Quick Share experience. Google will also offer a Quick Share iOS SDK for apps on the iPhone.
Following Apple's strategies to elevate device visibility in the App Store, the Google Play Store is shifting focus toward optimizing app discoverability for form factors like foldables. Aamir Siddiqui explains:
Starting next year, the Google Play Store will evaluate how apps and games run on foldables, giving well-adapted apps increased visibility and prominent placement in the store. Google confirmed at the ongoing Android Dev Summit that specific Play Store requirements around this change will be detailed later this year.
