When Does ‘Brothers’ Release On Apple TV?

The first two episodes officially drop on Wednesday, September 23 but Apple almost always releases episodes the evening before at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET, so that’s when I would expect this show to go live this evening. This makes for a stacked evening of Apple TV shows, with both Ted Lasso and Slow Horses following the same schedule.

Brothers reunites Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, stars of the much-beloved first season of True Detective (still perhaps the greatest season of television ever made in my humblest of opinions) who play fictionalized versions of themselves in a comedy inspired by their real-life friendship and the bizarre possibility that the two actors might actually be related . This is actually a real possibility, though it’s never been confirmed. The show plays with the idea, but in a fictionalized version of these characters and their families and friendship. It’s a bit confusing on purpose.

The story begins after fictional Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart. Woody packs up his family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch. What is supposed to be a chance to regroup gets substantially more complicated when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, lets slip a decades-old family secret suggesting that Matthew and Woody may share more than a close friendship: they might actually be brothers. Hence the show’s title.

Woody becomes obsessed with discovering the truth and begins digging into their families’ pasts, while Matthew has bigger, if less personal, problems: he’s considering a potential run for Governor of Texas. The series uses both storylines to play around with the actors’ public personas, the pitfalls of celebrity, navigating family and the increasingly blurry boundary between the real McConaughey and Harrelson and their fictional counterparts. Truly, time is a flat circle.

Episode 1 — “On the Road”

A surprise visit from Woody and his family takes a turn when Ma Mac reveals the bombshell that sets the season’s central mystery in motion.

Matthew takes his son Wyatt on his first hunting trip while Woody begins his own hunt for answers about the two men’s possible family connection.

The main cast currently listed by Apple includes:

  • Matthew McConaughey — Matthew
  • Woody Harrelson — Woody
  • Holland Taylor — Ma Mac
  • Natalie Martinez — Valentina
  • Brittany Ishibashi — Joy
  • Nolan Almeida — Wyatt
  • Ella Grace Helton — Clara
  • Noah Carganilla — River
  • Highdee Kuan — Olive
  • Oona Yaffe — Kai

McConaughey and Harrelson also executive produce the series.

David West Read is credited by Rotten Tomatoes as the series creator, while Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner and executive producer. Eisenberg’s previous credits include The Office , Jury Duty and Apple TV’s Lessons in Chemistry . Trent O’Donnell directs several episodes, including the pilot.

The executive-producing roster also includes McConaughey, Harrelson, Natalie Sandy, David West Read, Trish Hofmann, Bill Bost, Jason Winer, David Finkel, Brett Baer and Jeremy Plager. Paramount Television Studios produces the series for Apple.

Brothers Season 1 Release Schedule

Apple has officially confirmed eight episodes, with the first two premiering together and the finale arriving November 4.

Episodes appear to be sitcom-length installments, with current listings putting Episodes 1 and 2 at roughly 33 and 29 minutes, respectively.

As of now there is no Rotten Tomatoes score. I will update this post when that changes.

I’ll be checking this out and reporting back here on this blog , so stay tuned. Also look for my review of Slow Horses episode 2, which also drops this evening.
