The SDF-1 from the original 1982 Macross TV series is getting a massive new transformable diecast toy later this year, but only in Japan.

The SDF-1, or Super Dimension Fortress 1, is a huge transformable battleship known as the Macross in the series of the same name.

Designed by Kazutaka Miyatake , the idea to have it contain a city originated from Shoji Kawamori’s work on Ulysses 31 . It’s also emblematic of the original TV series, and it’s here that the issue starts.

While most of the rights for Macross finally reverted to BigWest back in 2021 , the original TV series and movie, Do You Remember Love? , are still in somewhat of a limbo, with Harmony Gold still involved with these two specific properties.

This is because back in the mid-80s, Macross , Southern Cross , and MOSPEADA were hacked together to create Robotech , which is owned by Harmony Gold.

That means because this SDF-1 toy is from the original Macross , it won’t be getting a release in the US. Although I doubt that will stop fans from importing this toy from various places online.

In addition to the limited release, this toy is priced at a suitably massive 99,000 yen (or around $623 at the current exchange rate).

You do get a lot for that price, though, with all manner of lighting gimmicks, accessories, and sizeable heft at around 65 cm in size, due to the fact that it is 1/2000 in scale.

The other nice piece of news is that both T-Rex and Kazutaka Miyatake have worked on this toy, as the official Bandai Spirits site has a nice new interview with them both about it.

While I technically prefer the movie version of the SDF-1 , which already has an amazing toy by Arcadia , this is definitely the biggest and most impressive toy of the TV iteration.

With any luck, I will be able to pick one up when it is released in Japan this November, but I honestly have no idea where to put it.
