September’s Best New Movie Secures A 94% Rotten Tomatoes Score
As we head into fall, we are starting to dig into Oscar season, and one potential award-gatherer is about to be released. It has secured a 94% Rotten Tomatoes review score with dozens of critic reviews in, and if it’s going to win anything, it could be Best Actor for its star.
The film is Primetime , where Robert Pattinson plays To Catch a Predator Host Chris Hansen during the series’ run. There are not many trailers or clips that have proven as viral as Primetime, which has spread around the internet many times over, resulting in at least one meme with millions of views, Pattinson uttering the famous “You see how this looks, right?”
While it is debatable how much Pattinson physically resembles Hansen, his voicework is top-notch, something that Pattinson has always been stellar at (for the full scope of his range, watch The Boy and the Heron ). Even from these trailers, if the film is remotely good, it seems almost certain that Pattinson will rack up at least some nominations. And it is good, according to the critics that have given it a 94% score, which at one point was a flat 100%. There are only two negative reviews for it.
Right now, that score for Primetime has no equal on the board, though there are at least a few potential rivals like Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil and what may be its biggest threat, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom . No joke, you do not want to mess with Shaun the Sheep movies. But in terms of prestige and overall quality, it should be hard to top Primetime , no matter its rivals’ scores. Here’s what some critics are saying about Primetime , and Robert Pattinson’s performance in particular:
New York Magazine – “I’ve admired Pattinson for years, but nothing quite prepared me for his turn as Hansen... It’s a stunning demonstration of the actor’s range, and watching the film you can’t imagine any other performer of his generation pulling it off.”
Little White Lies – “Robert Pattinson, wears Chris Hansen’s skin like a suit, affecting his selachian stare and unimpeachable insistence he’s on a mission to “cleanse the world of an ancient evil”. He’s sharper than ever.”
While an A24 movie and not some sprawling blockbuster, it stands to reason that Primetime may do quite well on a relatively low budget. On September 25, its opening weekend, it’s going up against Brad Pitt’s combat dog movie, Heart of the Beast, which I might expect to win the weekend. There’s also Forgotten Island from DreamWorks, a new animated feature. A third place finish for Primetime , maybe? Perhaps, but I don’t think anything will take away from the quality of the film or Pattinson’s performance.
