These are happy times if you’re a fan of gaming on really big screens. Just days after JMGO announced the launch in the U.S. and Europe of the world’s first projector to deliver 120Hz refresh rates with 4K content , AWOL Vision has also announced a new 4K 120Hz debutante. In fact, AWOL Vision claims that its new LuxVision projector is also a world first – specifically the world’s first 4K 120Hz Ultra Short Throw projector with optical shift.

That’s a rather more specific world first claim than JMGO made for its IRIS Ultra Max projector, it has to be said. But then the LuxVision really is a very different beast to JMGO’s cradle-mounted, non-UST model. In fact, the LuxVision has got so much going on, including a completely customizable design, that the features it claims make it a “world first” projector are really just a small part of its overall appeal.

Unveiled at the recent IFA Technology show in Berlin, the core features of the LuxVision beyond its UST approach (which lets it deliver an image of up to 200 inches when sat just inches from your wall or screen), gaming-friendly 4K/120Hz playback support and ability to optically move the image up and down to make it easier to fit it on your screen are its use a single-chip DLP projector engine illuminated by a triple laser system capable of pumping out a massive 6,000 ISO Lumens of brightness.

The projector’s gaming potential is further backed up by a claimed 1ms of input lag when running in its fastest responding mode; automatic low latency mode switching; variable refresh rate support; and a Dolby Vision Gaming mode that lets you enjoy the extra precision and control of Dolby Vision HDR graphics while still enjoying a low latency experience.

The LuxVision is also the latest projector to claim coverage of 110% of the AV world’s most extreme Rec.2020 color gamut, while its image optimization features include Dynamic Tone Mapping for HDR10 images, a 7-level dynamic Iris system for fine-tuning color and contrast, and Filmmaker Mode and IMAX Enhanced picture presets. The projector can play 3D video, too, if you’re into that.

There’s even a return of the anti-rainbow effect system (for combatting the fleeting red, green and blue colour stripe noise that single-chip DLP projectors can suffer with) that I’ve seen work so well on AWOL Vision’s Valerion Visionmaster Pro 2 projector, and a bit less brilliantly on the brand’s excellent Aetherion Max UST projector. Plus all the LuxVision’s impressive video specifications are backed up by a potent built-in Dolby Atmos speaker system.

The LuxVision is impressively well connected by projector standards, with highlights including three 4K/120Hz-capable HDMI ports and a Display Port. There’s integrated Wi-Fi support, too, to feed the projector’s built-in Google TV smart system.

While much of the justification for the LuxVision’s $5,999/£4,999 price is built on its impressive picture specifications and feature count, it also boasts easily the most customizable design I’ve ever seen with a projector. The metal parts of its bodywork, for instance, can be bought in three different ‘core’ colours: Zinc Alloy, Gold and Mirrored Silver. But if you order online direct from AWOL Vision, you can also choose to have the main projector top plate areas in Brushed Aluminium, Brushed Brass, Brushed Cooper, Soft Leather Grain, Carbon fibre or Sintered Stone, while you can choose to have the vertical grille covers that run round the projector’s sides finished in Oak, Walnut, Ebony, American Cherry, Zinc Alloy and Matt Black Spray-Coated Zinc Alloy.

The range of looks this combination of optional finishes gives you has to be seen to be believed – and AWOL Vision told me when I visited its IFA stand that if should be possible to deliver a truly bespoke finish for anyone wiling to pay for the privilege.

This isn’t the end of the LuxVision’s customizability, either. The projector also hides an expansion bay above the standard connections into which you can choose to slot as an add-on option the extra HDMI ports required to unlock a new multi-screen feature that lets the LuxVision show four different HDMI sources at once.

On top of all this direct LuxVision customization, AWOL Vision was showing off on its IFA stand both an expansive suite of cabinet furniture into which you can place your UST projector, one of AWOL Vision’s motorised rising screens and even a large speaker system, and a glass-topped case/rising screen cradle system designed to let you use the LuxVision outdoors.

If the LuxVision’s many unique features sound right up your street, the AWOL Vision LuxVision is expected to go on sale in the latter half of October this year.
