You are good at your job. Your reviews say so. You hit the numbers and the clients ask for you by name. Nothing on your job description is missed. Then the role you wanted goes to somebody with two years less experience. You have read their LinkedIn twice trying to work out what they did.

I founded a social media agency at 22 and sold it in 2021. I hired over 30 social media managers in that time, and interviewed hundreds, and they arrived with similar resumes and the same job description. Within a year some of them had made themselves impossible to replace and the rest were still waiting to be told what to do.

AI is coming for the jobs that are easy to describe. If everything you do fits inside a job description, software can take a run at it. Here are five ways to think bigger at work.

Think bigger at work before AI gets to your job first

Do the job above yours before anyone offers it

Watch the person one level above you and write down what fills their days. Then start doing the parts nobody has claimed. The report everybody dreads and the decision that gets put back to next week every week. You become the obvious choice for a promotion when you are already doing the job beyond yours.

Then you ask. The ask is stronger when you can say you are already doing it. Book the conversation. Say the title you want, and list what you have already taken on. Do the bigger job without asking for the title and you keep the bigger job at the old salary.

Get on top of how your company makes money

Find out what your company charges and what a client costs to deliver. If the numbers are available, somebody in finance will send you the numbers if you ask for them. Sales or marketing might too. The best social media managers I hired understood the setup of the company. They were on top of it, offering clients sales and suggesting things that would extend their contract, and nobody had asked them to do any of that.

Take that into your next review. What you brought in, what you saved, what you extended. Asking for more money without explaining how you create it puts the whole decision on how much your manager likes you. Give them the commercial case.

Learn AI and do the work of three people

Somebody doing your job at another company has already been replaced by software. So many jobs are getting replaced by AI. Do not let it be yours. Open the tools this week and apply them to the biggest proportion of your work. Start with the reporting and the first draft of everything you write. Produce the output of three people. From one desk.

Detail your process in writing. Show that the task you inherited now takes a fraction of the time. Put your name on the new process and send it to your manager and the department next door. Learning the tools is how you master skills faster than your job description updates. Let other people be replaced with AI.

Go after bigger clients than the ones you were given

You look after a list of clients somebody handed you when you joined. Write down who your dream clients would be, and ten names is enough to start. The names you would be proud to say in a meeting, the logos that change how people see the company. Then find out where those people spend their time and connect with them on LinkedIn.

Put yourself in the rooms they are in. The conference nobody from your team bothers with. Take it upon yourself to bring them on board before anybody gives you the remit. One client bigger than anything on your list changes what people believe you are capable of.

Visualize the role you want and tell your manager

Describe the role you want inside your company. What you are in charge of. What your day looks like from the first hour to the last, and what you hand over and never touch again. Visualize the top of the mountain, then work out how it happens. Figure out why that is what you want.

Share it with your manager. Say the role and the timeline, then ask what would need to be true. Build an internal scorecard against the role you described and check yourself against it every quarter. A manager who knows where you are going starts handing you work that gets you there.

Your job survives AI when you think bigger at work

The role above yours is being done badly by somebody, or it is not being done at all. Either way there is a gap. You are allowed to walk into it before anyone invites you. Start with the part of the role nobody wants. Do it well enough that removing you would cost, then go and say what you want next. Make yours the job that grew while everybody else defended the size they were given. Nobody is coming to spot your potential.
